History of Medicine

During the 11th Century, the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem was established by the pope after monks had treated Christians making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. During the crusades, the order took up arms as the Knights Hospitaller and in the 12th century established a 2000 bed hospital in Jerusalem. The order defended Malta in the 1500s and grew to become the Knights of Malta until the order was abolished during the reign of Napoleon. It was revived in England in the 19th century and St. Johns Ambulance was established by the order in 1877 to provide organised, emergency medical care.
